Bakar and Kraljevica

18/06/2011 22:27:04

Hello form Rab!!

Right now we are already going towards the south coast of Croatia, and we are at Rab harbour waiting for some sudden bad wether to go away.

This morning we left Bakar where we stayed for two days. The sensations after this stay are quite intense. Let’s see what we have recorded.

In the first place Bakar, Bakarac and Kraljevica form a bay which is, in fact, a large natural port.

Bakar is situated in the north part of the bay. The village is a marvelous place that has nowadays 800 inhabitants.

In the villlage, above all, you can see the castle and the church.

We could visit both the castle and the church. The castle is being refurbished little by little. In a few days there will b, inside the castle, an exhibition miniature ships.

The church was quite a surprise for us. Actually it was the third biggest church of Croatia at some point; a sign that the village had a more splendorous past.

Some of the houses that the Archduke pointed out are still there. For instance the house of the painter; which is known as the “roman house”, or the house of St, Anna’s square, of turquish origin.

For many years this bay became a true spa center but during the XXth century the industrialization also left its mark. We can observe some heavy industry centers at both sides of the bay.

Also now a highway is being constructed up on the top hills of Bakar. The works are quite large, and it can be easily seen.

We could talk to Kruno Lazanja, director of services at the town hall. He commented that they are trying to work in order to recover the touristic flavour that once had the village,

We obtained some views from the top of the sorrounding mountains both to the east and to the west of Bakar. As for the west side, we climbed the mountain in a little Wood the same way as the Archduke did.

He observed that the road cut the wood in two parts. Nowadays we have seen how the railway, the road and finally the highroad divide the Wood in four parts.

We also climbed the little hill of Bakarac that takes us to the ruins of the old castle.

Kraljevica is situated in the little bay just at the entrance of the larger bay.

In Kraljevica it is easy to see at first sight the castle of the frangipani, and just after, one has the sight of the large ship construction sites situated at the right hand side of the little bay.

As you can see a visit plenty of contrasting views, which probably we will have to analyze in better detail once we are back in Mallorca, and we prepare the comparisson reports.

Best wishes!!
