The Archiduque wrote about the people in Levkada:
"One of the primary traits of the population there, especially those in the country, is their austerity. They are pious and good towards their neighbors but barely work in industry or trade. Nor are they apt for emigration, unlike the inhabitants of nearby Ithaca. Women like working in the home and taking care of children, while widows are satisfied being able to take care of their own homes themselves."
