“Unlike his siblings, Ludwig Salvator was allowed to run free as a child. His mother in particular fostered his love of independence. In the Boboli Gardens, he would play with his monkeys in the treetops. One morning, a cheerless teacher was sent to little Ludwig with the task of teaching him to read. The boy asked the teacher to give him a box filled with the letters of the alphabet. He then found an old housekeeper and went about asking him the name of each letter. By the time the teacher returned the next day, Ludwig knew all of the letters.”
