“There are numerous coral banks near the island, especially between the latter and Meganisi, Arkudi, Atoko, etc. In 1903, 1904 and 1905 the Greek government sent for ten or twelve coral fishermen from Naples to dedicate themselves to this trade here from May 1st to October those three years. The general result was 1,700 kg of coral, 10% of which the Italian fishermen kept. The remaining 90% belonged to the state and can be found in Athens in their original state. The Athens government now wants to create a factory for coral objects.”
