“In such a mountainous landscape there naturally is a quantity of more or less broad valleys. We shall only name the most important ones: 1. the valley of towns from Alexandros between the Skaros mountains and the hills of Sfakiotes; 2. the valley found in the Skaros mountains; 3. Phterno valley near the town of the same name; 4. the valley in Sfakiotes, one of the prettiest, surround by seven hills with houses; 5. the valley in the town of Karya and one situated a bit further down; 6. Livadi valley in Karya; 7. Neraidalous valley between Karya and Exanthia; 8. the valleys of Enkluvi surrounded by ancient natural walls; and, 9. a long valley between Komilio and Athani.

Another curiosity on the island are the valleys in volcano cauldrons, up high and without any drainage. The largest is Livadi valley.

The rains accumulate here in autumn, winter and spring and flow through underground channels, creating the enormous wealth of springs characterizing this island. Levkas (Lefkada) is, as we’ll see further on, the island with the most water of all in the Ionian Sea.”
