“A lot of wine was produced on Paxos 20 years ago, sufficient for the island’s consumption. 100 years ago, enough was produced for its export. Since the plague affecting grapevines [= phylloxera], many vines were abandoned, and the bare terraces are now covered in wild shrubs. The majority of vines were found on the western part of the island but also some points in the east, all near the sea or overlooking it. Vines still cover some heights on Antipaxos. Grapevines are fertilized in February and the beginning of March. In January, and around Lakka in February, the grape vines are cut back and kept low except for those near homes.”
