“Two lines of rocks in the middle of the streets of Bizerte form small canals for water. During severe rains several years ago they were true sewers. Very few are asphalted. Their base consists of earth and gravel.

The keystones on the arches those streets traverse give them a lot of character as they’re made of wood. Those arches are very numerous on Du Camp Street. At the start of the latter is a fountain shaped like a trough.

Here and there in the city, columns ending in horseshoe arches form shady passageways. You get lost, end up in dead-ends and have to turn back.”

Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, Bizerte, J. Rothschild, Paris, 1900 (Prague, 1897)
