Lo que dice el Arxiduc:

“The majority of homes used to have a wall all around with an attached garden. Every house looked like a fortress with arrow slits on all sides for inhabitants to attack their aggressors. The entrance is normally found after climbing up a few steps, also descending into what could be called the basement and from where you could climb up to the first floor through a trapdoor, the latter serving as an additional safety measure against attacks from the enemy.”

Datos proyecto Nixe III:

We are certainly in an area where the frequent battles between the Ottoman Empire and other Christian-influenced countries such as Venice made this place quite unstable. Many traditional staircases climbing up to the main door on the second floor can still be seen.

Also, before the Ottomans conquered the city, there were interior doors connecting one house to the next. In case of attack, people could go from house to house until reaching the citadel to seek protection.
