Paxos and Antipaxos’ economies are certainly based on tourism. This circumstance has allowed its inhabitants to better withstand the severe economic crisis affecting Greece these last few years.  The islands depend less on the national market and have thus been able to survive better.

We saw very well-to-do tourists on Paxos. The island’s tourism has not become massive, featuring relatively small establishments instead. The philosophy is for tourists to stay in small homes rather than in apartments and hotels.

Many tourists come by boat. Today, we see a lot of tourists moving about. During the day, boats unload hundreds of tourists with less purchasing power but who also keep the shops in Porto Gaios busy during the day. In the afternoon, private and chartered boats come in, though they have to leave in the morning to make way for the tourist boats. Consequently, the type of tourist changes radically at night, generally more sophisticated than their daytime counterparts.
