Lo que dice el Arxiduc:

“Most of the rock samples from the Columbretes archipelago are of volcanic origin, like those of active or recently extinct volcanoes. In general, they are porous and scoriaceous, like those found in loose expulsions or in the surface complexes of lava currents. A few of these samples consist of compact rocks. Judging by their appearance, they seem to be fragments of tuff, like most of the cemented accumulations of erupted material. Just a small portion is mixed with chalky sediments.

Besides these differences [...] there are two clearly differentiated groups. The first has greater variety and is characterised by a wealth of intermixed white sanidine feldspars. These are the trachytes found on La Foradada, La Ferrera and El Bauzá. The second, the basalt group, includes black rocks whose composition is dominated by crystals of olivine and augite, which are found on Columbrete Grande and La Señoreta.”

Further notes about the islands’ geology:

XavidelSenyor tells us that the different direction of the strata on Navarrete islet, compared to that on the other islands, may be due to the lava having been released underwater.

Lastly, a look at Carallot reveals that it is just as the Archduke drew it, thus refuting the legend that a warship severely damaged it.
