“The basalt of the Columbretes belongs to the group of plagioclase feldspars. It is a black rock that appears simple, although it is in fact composed of feldspar and pyroxene, with a few crystals of olivine standing out. Its texture is cellular, porous, almost scoriaceous. It occurs in large quantities at the top of the crater on the main island and nearby islets, covering the volcanic tuff. It is very hard and tough, and it sends off sparks when it is hit with a hammer. Blackish, loamy soil is found as a disintegration product.”
